For Immediate Release:

The Assaulted Women’s Helpline presents their 5th annual "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" fundraising dinner and silent auction on April 18, 2008

(TORONTO, ONTARIO) – Help end violence against women by joining the Assaulted Women’s Helpline (AWHL) at their annual fundraising gala. The "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" event, at the Four Seasons Yorkville, promises to be a magical evening featuring fine-dining, a pampering zone, silent auction, fabulous prize giveaways and exquisite performances by the Arabesque Dance Company.

Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in this country. According to Statistics Canada, more than 50 per cent of Canadian women over the age of 16 have been victims of physical or sexual violence.

Better education and resources are essential to eliminating this problem, and the Assaulted Women’s Helpline is an essential service for the women of Ontario. "Every year the Helpline answers more than 49,000 calls. It is imperative that we continue to increase awareness about violence against women and to raise funds to ensure that all Helpline calls are answered," says Sandra Diaz, the event’s organizer.

Tickets for this extraordinary evening are $125 per person or $1200 per table of 10 and can be purchased by calling (416) 364-4144 ext. 233 or online at www.awhl.org. Ticket price includes entrance to the event, a delicious meal, as well as wine with dinner and the show. The presenting sponsor for the event is Bell and all proceeds will go directly to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline. Please join us and bring a mother, sister, daughter, partner or friend, and together we’ll celebrate the courage of the women who call our line and all women who play a part in our lives.

Since 1985 the Assaulted Women’s Helpline has offered a toll-free telephone crisis line to women in the province of Ontario who experience abuse. The AWHL provides counseling, emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals in up to 154 languages. This life-saving service allows women to reach out for help free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, assured of their anonymity and confidentiality.
